Dartmouth Caravan Club Site

The Camping and Caravanning club site in Dartmouth is a good base to explore this area of South Devon. We visited at Easter time and were welcomed with a friendly smile and a warden on a quad bike to escort us to our pitch at the far end of the site.
We were pleased when we pulled up on site to see a pub on the left hand side of the drive which served food. This could be a gold mine and probably does pretty well anyway with all the campers and caravanners calling in for something to eat, it's not the best pub meals we have ever had but it saves on cooking and sometimes, after a hard day of sightseeing and holidaying, that's what most important.
We were on a hard standing pitch with electric, grass pitches also available to a total of 90 pitches. The site has the usual high standard shower and toilet blocks with Mother and toddler rooms, washing up facilities, a motorhome service point, children's play area and on site shop selling local produce.
Situated in Stoke Fleming on the south Hams coast and overlooking Start Bay, it is a 5 minute drive into Dartmouth itself although with parking as difficult as it is in Dartmouth, you may prefer to get a taxi or the bus from outside the campsite entrance into town itself. Buses from here also go to Blackpool Sands, Salcombe and Plymouth if you want a break from driving yourself. The nearest train station is Totnes some 13 miles away.
Devon's own award winning Blackpool Sands beach which is just one mile away is not to be confused with the popular resort of Blackpool, Lancashire - the clue is there is no tower here!
Dartmouth is a town full of naval history, if you remember the Onedin Line waterfront scenes many of these were filmed here. The Britannia Royal Naval College is still open to visitors, as are the castle and National Trust Gardens. There are coastal walks, quaint cobbled streets to shop in, numerous seafood and fresh fish restaurants around the harbour and markets to visit or perhaps you fancy a touch of fishing or sailing yourself - all is available in Dartmouth itself.
From Dartmouth, why not take the ferry up river to Dittisham, a beautiful little village which sits along the Dart estuary. From there take the Greenaway Ferry from Dittisham over to Agatha Christie's former home and gardens on the Greenaway estate, which is now owned by the National Trust and takes day visitors.
A visit to Dartmouth is well worth the effort with so many things to do in the area and the Camping and Caravanning site is a great base for this.

Travelers to developing world areas often don't have access to potable tap water. As a result, many travelers purchase bottled water, a cost that can quickly add up over the course of a trip. There are other options, however, including chlorine tablets, iodine drops, and good old fashioned boiling. My preferred method of water treatment, though, is UV light treatment. SteriPEN makes a variety of handheld UV light treatment devices and after using several, I've come to rely on the SteriPEN Traveler for my water treatment needs.
The SteriPEN Traveler uses UV light to render the DNA of bacteria and viruses, inactive. It takes approximately 45 seconds for the device to treat a half liter of water. All you need to do is place the light wand in the water you want to treat, hit the button, and gently stir the water as the UV light does its work. When the solid green light comes on, the water has been treated and it is safe to drink.
The SteriPEN Traveler is lightweight and highly portable. It easily fits into my daypack and it only takes 4 AA batteries. I use rechargeable NiMH batteries and each charge is good for roughly 200 treatments. The device also comes with a plastic cap which protects the UV wand when you are not using it. I have traveled throughout West Africa with the SteriPEN Traveler and it has consistently performed in a variety of environments.
One thing to keep in mind when using this device: make sure to filter the water before using the UV light. As is the case for most treatment options, the SteriPEN Traveler is ineffective when it comes to treating cloudy water that contains suspended particles. You can buy a water filter or you can use a coffee filter for a more low-tech solution. If you're really in a bind, you can even use a t-shirt.
The light wand on the SteriPEN Traveler is somewhat fragile and there have been several occasions where I almost broke it. Be careful when using the device and make sure to always put the plastic cap on when you are not using it. This may be the biggest complaint by SteriPEN customers, but if you take the proper precautions and use the device carefully, you won't have anything to worry about.
There are many different ways to treat your water when you are traveling. The SteriPEN Traveler is one option that I've found to be both convenient and effective.

Camping Tips in Sahyadri Mountains, Forts for Camping in Maharashtra

People often go for trekking in the Sahyadri mountains and then end up staying on forts at night time. Most of them are not prepared for the camping at night.
Following tips will help you if you end up in an overnight trek
1. No matter where you are going, carry plenty of water and some food with you. Carry something that you can eat without cooking.
2. During the rainy/winter season carry a camping tent. Finding a shelter in Sahyadris is hard. Also tents keep you safe from crawling creatures like scorpions and snakes.
Keep a Knife handy and if possible a fire burning during the night time.
3. If you need a toilet break. Make sure you inform your trekking mates and then go. Do not venture out alone.

Harishchandragad Fort: This fort takes a lot of time to climb, 7-8 hours. We recommend that you carry enough insulating material for the winter season. It gets really cold on the fort during the winter season. You can find good accommodation in the Harishchandreshwar temple on the fort.
Rajgad Fort:
Rajgad is the best fort for camping in the winter season. It takes about 2 hours to reach to the top and then a couple of hours more to check the fort. There are 2 temples at Rajgad which can be used to rest during night time. The large temple can accommodate 40 ppl and the smaller one has a capacity of 6 ppl.
The villagers here sell firewood for Rs 50. Make sure that you purchase lot of firewood as it gets really cold if you are visiting during the winter season.

This fort is located in lonavala and is one of the best forts for camping. The trekking takes just 20 mins and then there is a cave on the fort which can be used for the night time.
