Great campfire meals are the champagne of a family camping experience at any campground! Yet the majority of campers manage hotdogs or marshmallows on the fire but have limited success with proper meals or more difficult to cook proteins like chicken. Our concern, therefore, has to be demystifying the delight one gets from food cooked on an campfire. So get your taste buds salivating and settle in to a trail of basic tips to appetizing, tasty pleasures. The first thing you will want to do is build a cooking fire. Most campgrounds provide a fire pit and even a grate or grill upon which they would like you to cook. You will likely find, however, that the grating provided by the campground is dirty and more than a little rusty. Using it exclusively to grill food would certainly result in unappealing if not unhealthy food. So bring your own metal grill. It should have a larger surface than the volume of food you expect to have on it at any time. Extra surface area allows you to move food to the edges of the grill thereby creating an "off the direct heat" space that is useful in cooking without burning the food.
A larger grill will also enable the campfire to be smaller and in better control when confined to the back or center of the provided area. Indeed, a campfire made of hardwood burned down to coals need not be large to be exceedingly hot where one made from softwood will produce a greater volume of ashes rather than coals and will be less hot for cooking purposes. Hardwoods are oak, maple or fruit trees to name a few while pine is an example of a softwood.. Almost all campgrounds will have a hardwood supplier nearby or perhaps even circulating within the grounds daily. Or there may be dead falls in nearby woods you can pick up. Remember, apart from the prohibition on cutting down trees in most campgrounds, fresh-cut standing timber makes a crummy campfire if you can even get it lit before you run out of matches!
Now that we have a bed of coals with a grill on it that is clean and can be kept that way, we're off to the races. Most of us grill at home and cooking on a campfire is little different. Your full attention is required when there is food on the grill to keep it from burning at worst and drying out at least. Have a good set of long -handled utensils to avoid burning yourself when turning the food and make sure there is a full pail of water in the immediate vicinity in case the campfire gets outside the pit. In addition, if you are worried about getting food cooked before it burns, par-boil it before grilling!
It's important to remember that not all cooking is grilling even though this is a campground kitchen! Make sure that your equipment includes a limited number of pots and pans of appropriate sizes (a fry pan, a pasta pot and a slightly smaller one for veggies sounds right). Inexpensive is OK here because you will be paying enough attention to the food while it is cooking to avoid sticking. And don't worry about the fire blackening and thus "ruining" the pots. Rub a handful of ordinary dish soap on the outside of each pot before it goes on the fire. You will be amazed to see the black goo just rinse off in the clean-up! Remember. Soap the outside of the pot so you make sure the pasta is tasting smoky not soapy!
The result is campfire cooking at it's finest? A little knowledge has led to proper use of a fire pit and a safe, hot fire. A little know how has prompted careful cooking. Applied energy has ensured you accord due attention to quality of the product you brought to the campground. And at every step, the time you invested in acquiring and packing the right equipment paid off! Food now looks and smells appetizing and the taste, you'll agree... champagne! Experiencing a safe, fun-filled camping trip is the thrill of a lifetime! You do not have to be a related to Daniel Boone or any other outdoors person, just rely on a good leader and follow his/her game plan. Find a camping group and pack your gear!
If you are the leader of the group, your first step toward having an easy camping trip should begin with creating a master plan. Determining the length of time you and your group will spend on your trip is crucial. This will depend largely on the activities of the individuals going on the trip; such as work schedules, school sports, and other obligations. If this trip is a new adventure, you will probably want to limit it to a short week-end. If you forget some of the items, you can always manage without them for two days and two nights. Since this will be your trial run, the items left off your check list the first time will help you to plan better for longer trips such as Memorial Day or Labor Day weekends.
Secondly, make a check list of items that will be needed for your comfort. Your master list of items should include such things as the type of shelter, cooking methods, food supplies and personal hygiene. Always plan for entertainment, whether it be group or individual activities. Frisbees, footballs or other types of balls can keep all ages busy for quite some time. Camping in the Florida Keys

Wanting to camp in the Florida Keys then there are many campgrounds from which to choose. The great thing about camping in the Keys is you are never very far from the beaches. Once you leave Florida City you basically drive from one small island to the next one and none of these islands are very wide. The drive from Florida City to Key West is a little over 120 miles and can take many hours to drive. The good thing is there are campgrounds all along the way. My wife and I have camped in the Keys five times at three different campgrounds and we loved each camping trip. Below are the two State Campgrounds we have camped at.
Long Key State Park located around mile marker 67 is where our camping experience stated a little over four years ago. It all started when our neighbors invited us to the Keys for the weekend, they wanted us to see what camping was all about. We fell in love with the idea of camping immediately. The park's 60 campsites all overlook the Atlantic Ocean and most of these sites sit within ten feet of the water line. Each campsite comes equipped with a picnic table, ground grill, water and electricity. Three restrooms, with hot showers, are centrally located.
The road that leads into the campground is great for the person that wants to take a leisurely walk. In addition, there are two nature trails The Golden Orb Trail is a forty minute walk that will take one through several plant communities. The Layton Trail is located on the bay side of the park and takes fifteen minutes to walk. For the person that loves to ride a bicycle, there is a bike path that runs beside the highway. Because of the calm shallow waters this is an ideal spot for year round canoeing.
Bahia Honda is noted as one of the best beaches in South Florida. The campground is about thirty miles from Key West and is near Big Pine Key. It is located along both the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. Mind you, you cannot sit at your camp site and see the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico at the same time. Sandspur camping area sits along the Atlantic Ocean and is mostly for tent campers with a great view of the beach and the sites are well shaded. Buttonwood camp area sits next to the Gulf and is mostly for larger campers. The interior lots sit in a canopy of trees and shrubs which provide privacy while the water front lots are open. However, the water front lots provide a spectacular view of the sun setting over the Gulf. The main marina has nineteen boat slips available for overnight rental and they include water and electric.
Bahia Honda has several white sandy beaches for you to enjoy. Calusa is the smallest beach and is located on the northwest side of the island. Loggerhead is the shallowest beach and is located on the south side of the island. It is known for the large shallow sand bar just a few feet offshore. Sandspur is the largest beach and it is located on the southeast end of the island. There are three large pavilions in the Sandspur area and a restroom with outdoor fresh water showers. In addition to the beaches one can take a leisurely bike ride on the park's 3.5-miles of paved road.
The park has three nature trails. The Silver Palm Trail is located at the southeast end of the island in Sandspur and there is a self-guided brochure available. The other trail is located on the southwest end of the island in the Calusa area and leads you to the top of the Old Bahia Honda Bridge. The view is spectacular; from the top of the bridge you can see the entire island and you will have a bird's-eye view of the water below.
Since my wife and I started camping we have discovered that camping is one of the best ways to enjoy the great outdoors and to experience what mother nature has to offer.
